The photograph below was taken in August of 1971, around the 10th
anniversary of the completion of the Berlin Wall. It was taken from
the Western Sector looking into East Berlin and clearly shows the "death
strip" that consisted of an electrical fence and vehicle barricades.
In the far distance, the famous East Berlin TV and radio transmitter is visible.
To control access to information, the Soviets and their eastern European
allies would jam radio broadcasts from the west and bombard their citizens
with the communist party's version of reality.
